THE PROS AND CONS OF HAIR DURING PREGNANCY

In the nine months of gestation, a pregnant woman goes through countless biological changes as the body adjusts to growing a little one. They’ll find themselves craving food they’ve never liked or become sensitive to smells. Outwardly, one of the differences many expectant mothers notice is how their mane seems more voluminous.

In reality, the hair isn’t actually growing thicker but rather, falls out less. Typically, about 5% to 15% of an adult’s locks naturally falls out in what they term as the ‘resting stage’ but this gets delayed as more estrogen is present in the body during pregnancy. For some, they may also find a change in the texture – usually straight hair becomes wavy or once curly hair straightens out – or colour of their hair. Body hair may also thicken in places such as the face, breasts and stomach.

When this happens, all that’s left to do is to enjoy it! Live out dreams of having a thick, shiny head of hair. There’s no need to switch hair products unless you’re using a dandruff shampoo prescribed by a doctor.

Post childbirth, the body goes through a process called ‘telogen effluvium’ where the hormone-levels lower and go back to normal. At this point, the unwanted body hair falls out and it’s common to find hair on the head falling out by the handful. For some, this shedding can result in temporary bald spots.

There’s nothing you can do to stop this naturally occurring process but it would be useful to pamper your scalp and keep it in the best condition. To stimulate hair growth by strengthening the roots, massage natural oils such as olive, coconut, almond or jojoba into your scalp. Warm up the oils before putting it into your hair and wrap your head with a towel after application to make sure all the goodness gets absorbed.
